As your teen gets older, they will likely want to be treated more and more like an adult. Those juice boxes of childhood will be swapped for designer coffee drinks, and the colorful cartoon characters they once loved will be packed away and replaced with human heartthrobs and heroines. But while it’s perfectly healthy to encourage their interests to age along with them, there’s still one area where you shouldn’t be in a rush for them to grow up. When it comes to your child’s smile, here’s why it’s important to keep bringing them to a pediatric dentist until they turn 18.
Why Does My Teen Still Need to See a Pediatric Dentist?
While in many cases it may seem like your teen is mature enough or “ready” to see a general dentist, there are several important benefits to seeing a pediatric dentist for children under the age of 18.
They’re Not Done Growing
Although your teen may not get any taller after about age 16, their jaw may continue to grow until they’re 22 years old. Thus, a pediatric dentist is the best person to monitor that growth, especially if they have been caring for your child throughout their development.
They Might Need Orthodontic Treatment
As your child’s smile grows, the need for orthodontic treatment may become more apparent. Tooth crowding and impaction that may not have been an issue previously could develop in the teens, and their pediatric dentist can monitor their smile at all stages, so they know exactly when to begin orthodontic intervention.
They May Have Wisdom Teeth Erupting
Wisdom teeth can begin erupting in the late teens and early 20s. If left in place, they can become painful and can even damage nearby teeth. Your child’s pediatric dentist can keep a close eye on their emerging wisdom teeth and if they need to be extracted, they can determine the best time to do so.
They May Not Be Quite Ready to Go it Alone
While your teen may be mature enough to do a variety of things they couldn’t do as a child, such as driving a car, making their own meals, and even completing their schoolwork without intervention, they may still need a little extra guidance when it comes to caring for their teeth and gums. A pediatric dentist can help ensure they are brushing and flossing correctly and help guide them to make smart decisions when it comes to their smile.
Remember, while your teenager may seem mature enough to graduate to a general dentist, it is best to keep bringing them to a pediatric dentist for as long as possible to ensure their teeth and gums get age-appropriate care for a lifetime of smiles.
