Have you ever heard of fluoride? It\u2019s basically magic that does a lot of great things for your teeth. Of course, brushing and flossing does that too, but fluoride is like a secret potion you can get almost anywhere. How? Because it\u2019s in the water you can get at home! But how did it get there, and what does it do? Read on to learn more about fluoride and how it makes your chompers strong and shiny<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

What Is Fluoride, Anyway?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Fluoride is a mineral that can make your teeth stronger and protect them from cavities. Mineral? Like a rock? Well, it\u2019s more like salt or sugar that dissolves in water. When you drink water with fluoride, it gives your teeth a shield to keep them safe from bad germs in your mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fighting Off Cavities<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cavities are little holes that can form on your teeth if you don\u2019t brush them correctly. They\u2019re caused by the germs\u2014bacteria, that like to live in your mouth after you eat or drink. Slowly, these bacteria weaken your enamel\u2014the hard part on the outside of your tooth. If the germs don\u2019t get brushed off, that\u2019s when cavities form. Fluoride stops this from happening!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Does Fluoride Get into My Water?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Your water usually comes from a special place in your city where it\u2019s treated so it can be used more. During this process, fluoride is added to the water before it gets sent out again. This way, it can be delivered all over the city and find its way into every cup of water you drink from the sink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where Else Can I Get Fluoride?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While the fluoride in your water is a good amount to get started, sometimes your teeth may need extra help. This is why it\u2019s added to your toothpaste and mouthwash as well. Dentists can also give you special treatments that will help prevent cavities for months!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now that you\u2019re basically a fluoride expert, tell your friends! Also, remind them to drink plenty of water and brush their teeth twice a day to keep cavities away. The next time you take a sip from your water cup, think about how you\u2019re helping your teeth stay strong and protected.
