As a parent, it\u2019s natural to be curious about these developmental issues. After all, you\u2019re invested in the health and safety of your little one. But what should you do? Will the issue resolve itself and stretch the tissue out over time?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to learn more about lip and tongue ties and how they should be treated, continue reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Is a Lip or Tongue Tie?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Lip and tongue ties, known medically as &#8220;ankyloglossia&#8221; and &#8220;labial frenulum,&#8221; respectively, occur when the thin pieces of tissue beneath the tongue or upper lip are shorter than usual. These ties can restrict the range of motion of the tongue or lip, affecting normal functions such as breastfeeding, speech development, and oral hygiene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Will the Lip or Tongue Tie Stretch Out Naturally?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In some milder cases, the tissues may stretch a little on their own and restore partial mobility. However, this is not a guarantee and shouldn\u2019t be treated as the normal way to treat a lip or tongue tie. In most cases, this tissue will persist into adulthood, continuing to cause issues with speech and digestion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Should a Lip or Tongue Tie be Treated?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Surgery is the only sure way to release a tie with lasting and complete success. Luckily, the surgical method of removing a lip or tongue tie (a frenectomy) is simple, painless, and incredibly effective. Once the connective tissue has been cut, your child will see an immediate improvement and their recovery time will be minimal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By staying informed, staying connected with your dentist, and providing support, you and your child can conquer their ties! If you see evidence that your child may be experiencing difficulties due to a lip or tongue tie, don\u2019t delay their treatment.
