While a little dental anxiety is normal, in some cases it can be so severe that sedation dentistry may be recommended. Naturally, however, you may have some questions. If you’re considering sedation dentistry for your child, here are some common questions and answers to help put your mind (and your child!) at ease.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is the use of sedation methods during dental procedures to help alleviate anxiety or manage a sensitive gag reflex. Your child’s dentist offers several different levels of sedation, which can be used depending on the severity of their anxiety.

Who is a Good Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?

Patients of any age can undergo a sedation dentistry procedure; however, your dentist will need to go over your child’s medical history first to determine if they are a good candidate for certain types of sedation. Patients with specific medical conditions may not be a good fit for some sedatives, so be sure to be completely transparent with your dentist during your consultation.

What are the Different Types of Sedation Dentistry Available?

There are several different types of sedation options available. These include:

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

This is administered right in your child’s dentist’s office. It is delivered via a tube that fits comfortably to the nose, so your child’s mouth is unobstructed. They then simply breathe in the sweet-smelling gas which is mixed with oxygen. Nitrous oxide creates a feeling of calm yet keeps your child fully awake and aware, so they are able to relax but still follow instructions and answer questions. The effects of nitrous oxide go away as soon as it is shut off. Once your child’s procedure is complete, their dentist will have them breathe pure oxygen for about five minutes. They will then be free to go and should have no lingering side effects.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is administered via pill that either dissolves under the tongue or is swallowed. Your child should remain awake; however, some patients do fall asleep. This is nothing to be alarmed about. Once your child’s treatment is complete, they may still feel groggy or sleepy and should return home to rest until the following day. It is also possible that they do not remember anything about the procedure, which is also normal.

Hospital-Based Anesthesia

Hospital-based anesthesia is best for children with severe anxiety who need a lengthy procedure. This is done in a local hospital under the watchful eye of a medical team. Your child will be completely asleep during this time and will neither feel nor remember a thing. Your dentist can discuss aftercare options for this type of treatment at your consultation. Typically, however, your child will be free to return home on the same day and recuperate from the comfort of their own bed.

What are the Side Effects of Sedation Dentistry?

While different types of sedation carry with them different risks of side-effects, most patients do not have any side effects whatsoever besides some lingering grogginess. Still, with nitrous oxide, for example, your child’s levels of B12 may be depleted during treatment, so they may be more likely to bruise following their procedure. If they are already low on this vitamin, their dentist can discuss alternative options that will carry a lower risk. This is why it is so important to discuss their complete medical history before choosing a sedation dentistry option.

Remember, it’s normal for children to be a little nervous about going to the dentist, but if their fears or anxiety are preventing them from getting necessary care, sedation dentistry is a safe, gentle way to make their appointments more comfortable. Speak to your pediatric dentist today about their sedation dentistry options so they can get the treatment they need without the stress.

About Dr. Rullo

Dr. Michael Rullo cares about kids.
